Exhaustive diets or hours spent at the gym do not always guarantee a perfect body. To effectively eliminate unwanted stubborn fat deposits, ultrasound-assisted liposuction is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Jamil Hayek, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Meliva - Kauno Kardiolitos Klinikos, notes that this is currently one of the safest and most advanced ways to achieve an aesthetically pleasing physique.
"The abdomen, flanks, and back are the most common areas for unwanted fat removal. However, VASER ultrasonic liposuction technology allows us to expand these zones, targeting fat from the chin, arms, inner and outer thighs, knees, and calves - essentially the entire body. Following a successful procedure, patients enjoy not only a more aesthetic body and proportional contours, but also firmer, more youthful-looking skin," says Dr. Hayek.
The plastic and reconstructive surgeon adds that the ultrasound waves emitted during the VASER liposuction procedure also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin and connective tissue. This prevents skin sagging, even after the subcutaneous fat layer has been removed.
More advanced than other liposuction technologies
During a VASER-assisted liposuction procedure, ultrasound waves selectively target fat cells in specific areas of the body. The ultrasound liquefies the fatty tissue, which is then gently suctioned out using specialized cannulas that do not damage surrounding tissues, nerves, or blood vessels.
According to Dr. Hayek, the fat removed during the procedure can also be grafted into other areas of the body during the same session: "VASER ultrasound technology keeps the fat cells viable, meaning they don't have to be discarded. Instead, they can be transferred to areas the patient wishes to enhance. For instance, during the initial consultation, women frequently express a desire to use the harvested fat for breast or buttock augmentation."
Compared to alternative liposuction methods, the VASER technique is significantly superior because it allows for exceptional precision and safety. It can target fat located extremely close to the surface of the skin, enabling surgeons to sculpt high-definition abdominal muscles or a well-proportioned waistline.
Furthermore, VASER liposuction is performed under local or general anesthesia, ensuring maximum patient comfort, notes Dr. Hayek.
"This is a minimally invasive procedure requiring only tiny skin incisions. The resulting scars are virtually invisible, and the recovery process is highly accelerated and less painful, allowing patients to return to their normal routines in just a few weeks. On average, the recovery period takes about 10 days for physically demanding jobs, while for sedentary desk work, it drops to just 2–3 days," explains the plastic and reconstructive surgeon from Meliva - Kardiolitos Klinikos, home to some of the top medical professionals in Lithuania.
Results require patience
While VASER liposuction can be performed on patients of various ages, those with good skin elasticity can expect the best results, emphasizes Dr. Hayek. Depending on the body area being contoured, the procedure can take up to five hours, with an initial healing period of up to two weeks.
"While one of the main pre-operative requirements is that patients must fast from food and liquids for at least 4–5 hours prior to surgery, there are several key guidelines to follow post-procedure as well. Most importantly, patients must wear specialized compression garments for at least one to two months to help the skin retract properly," says the surgeon from Meliva - Kauno Kardiolitos Klinikos.
Immediately following the liposuction, a course of at least 10 manual lymphatic drainage massages combined with radiofrequency therapy is recommended. This helps condition the skin and accelerates the reduction of swelling around the incision sites where the specialized cannulas were inserted. However, this is not the only requirement for patients seeking graceful body contours.
"While the skin heals completely within just a few weeks after a VASER liposuction procedure, the final results take up to 8 months to fully mature. Therefore, this procedure represents a long-term commitment to oneself and one's new body shape. To maintain and preserve these results for as long as possible, patients must adjust their lifestyle habits by adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activity," Dr. Hayek concludes.
